The day your toddler moves to their own bed is a big day in any family. But how do you know when the time is right? Do they tell you? Or do you encourage them? And how? Here are our tips and insights we've collected at Children's Mattresses Online to try and help make the transition go as smoothly as possible.

• There's no exact time. Most children make the switch between the ages of 1½ and 3½ years old.
• Naturally, you'll need to move your toddler to a bed once he or she has grown too big or become too active to sleep safely in their cot any longer. Once they are potty-trained, they'll also need to get out of the bed to use the loo.
• Don't rush out and buy a new bed the day your toddler climbs out of their cot. They may not be ready to get out of their own bed at night when everyone else is asleep. Lowering the cot mattress to the lowest postition could get you some more time. Also, remove any padded bumpers once the climbing begins.
• Have you got another baby on the way? If possible, try and make the switch 6-8 weeks before you are due to have the new baby. This lets your toddler settle in to his new bed before his cot gets "taken over."
• Every child is different. Some resist change. Some embrace it. Your firstborn will likely be very attached to their cot and existing mattress. Children do feel a lot of pressure at this stage in their lives with events such as  potty-training, nursery school, eating habits, etc.
• To ease the transition, here are a few tricks: put the new bed in the same place the cot used to be. (Or even place it in the room before he moves - so he can see it and get used to it.).
• Get them excited about moving into their own bed. Let them "help" you choose the bed. Let them sleep with their own familiar blanket, or buy them cool, new sheets and bedding
• Be sure their new bed is a safe bed with adequate support. You could even order the same type of mattress for their new bed as they had in their cot to help make the transition easier.
• As in everything: encourage but do not punish. If they need their cot for a while longer, so be it. One thing we are sure of: he or she won't be a baby forever. Make the most of this precious time you have together.
